Two Months Before the Tornado

I'm going to jump around a bit here in the next little while, showing and telling about some of our summer outings, but not necessarily in order of when they happened...

For instance, this particular daytrip took place early in June. We all piled into the van for a Sunday afternoon drive along the lake. Forty-five minutes into our trek, we stopped in a seaside resort town for our favorite go-to meal on the road, subs. With full tummies, we made it to our destination a half hour later.

We circled throught the quaint historic downtown and then made our way to the water. We walked along the boardwalk overlooking the beach and finally settled down on our blanket in the sand.

We found the beach quite entertaining. There was a playground right on the beach with different from the norm equipment for the kids. Also catching our interest, was a salt mine that happened to be loading salt onto a ship right next to the beach. Before heading home we stopped for very tasty gelatos. It was a really nice day and we agreed that we'd like to return again before long.

Fast forward two months. This darling, little town suffered a direct hit by a tornado in August. One man working in the salt mine was killed and many historical buildings and homes were badly damaged. It put fear of the many thunderstorms our area endures each summer in residents throughout "tornado alley." It will take time to rebuild this community- previously known as "the prettiest town" in this part of the country.
